This image of the Mars North pole was captured by the ESA's Mars Express spacecraft, from a height of 9,900 kilometers. Mars Express performed a "broom calibration" maneuver where the camera panned over the surface of the planet. This allows the camera to capture a wide view, still record a range of features at the same illumination conditions. The ice cap on the south pole is frozen water and carbon dioxide and it changes in size with seasons. This is a summer capture.
